Prairie Tree | The Flint Hills, Kansas | Limited Edition of 500 prints | The Flint Hills of Kansas have proved one of the most elusive photographic subjects in my career; I have made numerous quests into the hills in southeast Kansas that yielded nothing more productive than a sunburn. On my way home to Missouri from a spring art show in Texas, I drove through the night to be in the Flint Hills near sunrise. Patchy clouds were whipping past, creating some distinctive light on the prairie grasses. I thought of this tree, standing alone near the base of a gulley and barely made it to the location in time to catch some of the patchy light. The cloud creating the shadow behind and to the left of the tree was one of the last that morning.
