Retirement: I rode my bicycle along the pier hoping to get a few shots of the San Francisco skyline, or perhaps a cute picture of a seagul for my kids. I took a few of those pictures, but this is what I saw as I turned back around. The scene was so peaceful; the elderly couple seemed so content to hang their lines off the pier and wait for whatever would happen. I rode away on my bike without taking a picture, and then the symbolism of the framing hit me. It struck a profound chord within me and, I hate to say this, I almost fell off my bike thinking about it. I went back, framed this image, and took a single picture of what was to become one of my favorite pictures (and one of the very few with people in it). Some people spend their lives searching in vain for happiness; I caught a glimpse of it on the pier one April morning. There are a lot worse ways to spend retirement.
