Tallgrass National Preserve: Released January 2009 Once upon a time, these native prairie grasses stretched from Canada to Mexico. After the Louisiana Purchase in the 19th century, settlers moving west crossed countless miles of prairie grasses. Now that the land is settled and farmed, not much of the native grass remains. Photographed December 23, 2008 at the Tallgrass National Preserve, Kansas.
